CENTRAL-MID-LEVELS ESCALATOR AND WALKWAY SYSTEM

The Central-Mid-Levels escalator and walkway system in Hong Kong is the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world. The system covers over 2,600 feet in distance and traverses and elevation of over 443 from bottom to top. It opened in 1993 to provide an improved link between the Central and Mid-Levels districts on Hong Kong Island. The total travel time is twenty minutes, but many people walk while the escalator moves to shorten their trip. Due to the geographical situation, the same distance is equivalent to several miles of zigzagging roads if travelling by car.

SPIRAL ESCALATORS

A spiral escalator is a special design type of escalator in the form of a spiral/helical with curved steps. This escalator can curve to the left or right. The first spiral/helical escalator was developed and sold by Mitsubishi Electric in 1985. Since that time, Mitsubishi Electric has continued to be the only manufacturer to offer spiral escalators for indoor use. The first spiral escalator was installed at the International Exhibition Center in Osaka, Japan. The largest order of spiral escalators was the Shanghai New World Daimaru in Shanghai, China. A total of 12 units were installed in 2015.

LONGEST FREESTANDING ESCALATOR

The longest freestanding (supported only at the ends) escalator in the world is inside CNN Center’s atrium in Atlanta. It rises 8 stories and is 205 feet long. Originally built as the entrance to the amusement park The World of Sid and Marty Krofft, the escalator is now used for CNN studio tours.
