WEIRTON, WEST VIRGINIA

 

Weirton is a city in Hancock and Brooke counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia.  The city of Weirton extends from the Ohio border on the west to the Pennsylvania border on the east at a point where the northern extension of West Virginia is 5 miles across. It is the only community in the United States to touch two different states on either side and its own state on the other two.

The concept of the center of population as used by the U.S. Census Bureau is that of a balance point. The center of population is the point at which an imaginary, weightless, rigid, and flat surface representation of the 50 states and the District of Columbia would balance if weights of identical size were placed on it so that each weight represented the location of one person.  The 2020 national mean center of population is 37.415725 N, 92.346525 W, the most western and southern mean center of population point in our nation’s history. The 2020 center of population is 11.8 miles from the 2010 center and 885.9 miles from the 1790 center. Hartville, Missouri, the nearest incorporated municipality to the 2020 center of population, is a town of 594 people in Wright County, Missouri.

HIGH LEVEL, ALBERTA, CANADA

High Level is a town in northern Alberta, Canada. The population according to its 2017 municipal census is 3,992. High Level is home to the northernmost grain elevator in the world. In August 2019, Grain handler, Richardson Pioneer announced that construction had started to replace the existing grain elevator with a new one. The new facility, connected to Canadian National Railway track, will have 32,000 tons of storage capacity and a loop track configuration able to load 135 rail cars.

There are 3 municipalities that vie for the highest city in the United States. All 3 are in Colorado. Alma is a statutory town located in Park County, Colorado. The population was estimated to be 312 in 2018. According to Wikipedia, Alma, at an elevation of 10,578 feet, is the highest incorporated municipality in the United States with permanent residents. Alma, has a contiguous residential area (on Mountain View Drive) extending to 11,680 feet above sea level. Leadville is a statutory city located in Lake County, Colorado. The population was estimated to be 2,762 in 2018. At an elevation of 10,152 feet, Leadville is the highest incorporated city in North America. Winter Park is a home rule municipality in Grand County, Colorado. The permanent population was estimated to be 1,051 in 2018. Its motto is: “Colorado’s Highest”. Although the town center is at about 9,000 feet above sea level, Winter Park, using administrative boundaries as a measure, became the highest incorporated town in the U.S. after the July 2006 annexation of 5,214 acres of Winter Park Resort to allow new on-mountain improvements. Winter Park’s claim as the highest incorporated town is disputed since Winter Park has no residences above 9,550 feet, while contiguous residential neighborhoods in Leadville extend to 10,360 feet and in Alma to 11,680 feet. Also, Alma’s town center is at 10,361 feet. Alma is also the location of the highest post office in the United States. The Alma Post Office (80420) sits at an elevation of 10,578 feet above sea level.

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA

Bismarck is the capital of North Dakota and county seat of Burleigh County. The city’s population was estimated in 2018 at 73,112. In 1872 European Americans founded a settlement at what was then called Missouri Crossing, so named because the Lewis and Clark expedition crossed the river there on their exploration of the Louisiana Purchase in 1804-1806. In 1873, the Northern Pacific Railway renamed the city to Bismarck, in honor of German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Railroad officials hoped to attract German immigrant settlers to the area and German investment in the railroad. It is the only U.S. capital named for a foreign statesman.

Oakbrook Terrace is a suburb of Chicago located in DuPage County. The population in 2018 was estimated to be 2,119. Oakbrook Terrace has a total area of 1.278 square miles. Oakbrook Terrace is the smallest town in DuPage County in terms of both area and population. Oakbrook Terrace Tower is an octagonal 31-story office building located in the city of Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. It was built in 1987 and is 418-feet tall. Oakbrook Terrace Tower is the tallest building in Illinois outside of the City of Chicago. Oakbrook Terrace was originally named Utopia, a name suggested by a postmaster. The name Oakbrook Terrace was adopted in November 1959.

EL PASO, TEXAS V. CICERO, ILLINOIS – HISPANIC POPULATION

Although El Paso, Texas sits on the border with Mexico, Cicero, Illinois has a higher percentage of its population identifying as Hispanic.

MIDDLESBORO, KENTUCKY

Middlesboro, Kentucky is the only city in the United States built entirely inside a meteorite crater. Middlesboro is located in Bell County in southeastern Kentucky. The population was 10,434 at the 2010 U.S. census. It is located entirely between Pine Mountain and the Cumberland Mountains in the Middlesboro Basin, an enormous meteorite crater. The crater is approximately 3-mile-wide and the impactor is estimated to have been about 100 meters in diameter.
