THE GEYSERS POWER PLANT

The Geysers is the world’s largest geothermal field, containing a complex of 18 geothermal power plants, drawing steam from more than 350 wells, located in Mayacamas Mountains, approximately 72 miles north of San Francisco. Power plants at the Geysers are of the dry steam power plant type, where the steam directly powers the generator. In general, the Geysers has 1517 MW of installed capacity with n average production facto of 63% (955 MW).

SIACHEN GLACIER

The Siachen Glacier is a glacier located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalayas, just northeast of the point where the line of control between India and Pakistan ends. It is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world’s non-polar regions. It falls from an altitude of 18,875 feet above sea level down to 11,875 feet above sea level at its terminus. The glacier’s region is the highest battleground on Earth, where Pakistan and India have fought intermittently since April 1984. A cease-fire went into effect in 2003. Even before then, more soldiers were killed every year due to severe weather conditions than enemy fire. India built the world’s highest helipad on the glacier at Point Sonam, 21,000 feet above sea level, to supply its troops. India’s Sonam post is the highest permanently manned post in the world. In 1997, the Indian army established an STD-PCO (subscriber trunk dialing-public call office) to enable soldiers stationed on the glacier to call home. From 1997 until it was replaced by cell service in 2009, it was the world’s highest public telephone booth.

MIDDLESBORO, KENTUCKY

Middlesboro, Kentucky is the only city in the United States built entirely inside a meteorite crater. Middlesboro is located in Bell County in southeastern Kentucky. The population was 10,434 at the 2010 U.S. census. It is located entirely between Pine Mountain and the Cumberland Mountains in the Middlesboro Basin, an enormous meteorite crater. The crater is approximately 3-mile-wide and the impactor is estimated to have been about 100 meters in diameter.

HAMBACH SURFACE MINE AND SOPHIENHÖHE

The Sophienhöhe [spoil tip] is an artificial (man-made) hill in Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was created by surface mining at the open cast lignite mine Tagebau-Hambach operated by RWE Power AG. The distance (in respect to sea-level) between the top of Sophienhöhe and the lowest point of the pit is 1.952 feet. The tallest point of Sophienhöhe is Höller Horn at 955 feet above mean sea level. Sophienhöhe is the tallest artificial hill in the world. Tagebau Hambach is the largest hole in Europe and is the lowest surface point in Europe, lying 961 feet below mean sea level.

THE LOST SEA

The Lost Sea is a non-subglacial underground lake in Craighead Caverns, an extensive cave system located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains between Sweetwater and Madisonville, Tennessee. The Lost Sea is the largest underground lake in the United States and the second largest in the world. The visible surface of the lake measures 800 feet long and 220 feet wide (4.5 acres) at normal “full” capacity. The lake is 140 feet below the entrance to the cave and has a depth of at least 70 feet.

Note: A hot spring is a spring produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that rises from the Earth’s crust. While some of these springs contain water that is a safe temperature for bathing, others are so hot that immersion can result in injury or death.

SUBTROPOLIS

SubTropolis is a 55,000,000-square-foot artificial cave in the bluffs above the Missouri River in Kansas City, Missouri that is claimed to be the world's largest underground storage facility. Developed by late Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt via Hunt Midwest Real Estate Development, Inc., it has trademarked the phrase World's Largest Underground Business Complex. Dug into the Bethany Falls limestone mine, SubTropolis is, in places, 160 feet beneath the surface. It has a grid of 16 feet high by 40 feet wide tunnels separated by 25 feet square limestone pillars created by the room and pillar method of hard rock mining. The complex contains almost 7 miles of illuminated, paved roads and several miles of railroad track.
