MONOWI, NEBRASKA

Monowi, Nebraska is the only incorporated municipality in the United States with a population of 1.

Monowi's peak years were in the 1930s, when it had a population of 150. Like many other small communities in the Great Plains, it lost its younger residents to cities that were experiencing growth and offering better jobs. During the 2000 census, the village had a total population of two; only one married couple, Rudy and Elsie Eiler, lived there. Rudy died in 2004, leaving his wife as the only remaining resident. In this capacity, she acts as Mayor, granting herself a liquor license and paying taxes to herself. She is required to produce a municipal road plan every year in order to secure state funding for the village's four street lights.

Although the village is almost abandoned, it does have a bar called Monowi Tavern, operated by Elsie Eiler for passing trade. Elsie also maintains the 5,000 volume Rudy’s Library, founded in memory of her late husband, Rudy Eiler.

BAILEY YARD

Bailey Yard is the world’s largest railroad classification yard.

Bailey Yard personnel sort, service and repair locomotives and cars headed all across North America. Owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP), Bailey Yard is located in North Platte, Nebraska. The yard is named after former Union Pacific president Edd H. Bailey.

An average of 139 trains and over 14,000 railroad cars pass through Bailey Yard every day, and the yard sorts approximately 3,000 cars daily using the yard’s two humps. The eastbound hump is a 34 foot-tall mound and the westbound hump is 20 feet high. These are used to sort four cars a minute into one of the 114 "bowl" tracks, 49 tracks for the westbound trains and 65 for eastbound. The bowl tracks are used to form trains headed for destinations across North America, including the East, West and Gulf coasts of the United States, and Canadian and Mexican borders.

USPS - POSTAL FACTS - ZIP CODES

Zip Codes are placed AFTER the City, State and NOT BELOW them

Until 1963 the Post Office Department preferred that state and territorial names be written out in full to avoid confusion, but accepted the popular public practice of abbreviation.

The Department published a list of preferred abbreviations in the 1831 Table of Post Offices in the United States. The United States Official Postal Guide first published in 1874, also provided lists of preferred spellings. Most of the abbreviations in use in 1874 were still in use in 1943, although new states and territories had been added, and the abbreviation for California had been lengthened, from "Cal." to "Calif."

On July 1, 1963, the Post Office Department implemented the five-digit ZIP Code, which was placed after the state name in the last line of an address. To provide room for the ZIP Code, the Department issued two-letter abbreviations for all states and territories.

To date, only one change has been made to the abbreviations issued in 1963. In November 1969, at the request of the Canadian postal administration, the two-letter abbreviation for Nebraska, originally NB, was changed to NE, to avoid confusion with New Brunswick in Canada.

WHITECLAY, NEBRASKA

Whiteclay is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Sheridan County, Nebraska. The population was 14 at the time of the 2000 census.

In 2010, its four beer stores sold an estimated 4.9 million 12-ounce cans of beer, an average of over 13,000 cans per day, for gross sales of $3,000,000.

Whiteclay is located two miles from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where alcohol consumption and possession is prohibited.

In 2017, the four liquor stores lost their licenses, and the town ceased to be the main supplier of alcohol to the reservation.
