FERRARI WORLD ABU DHABI – FORMULA ROSSA

Formula Rossa is a launched roller coaster located at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Manufactured by Intamin, Formula Rossa is the world’s fastest roller coaster with a top speed of 149.1 miles per hour.

The coaster train accelerates to its top speed in 4.9 seconds using a hydraulic launch system which generates a release velocity similar to that of steam catapults on an aircraft carrier. Riders experience up to 1.7 G-force during acceleration and up to 4.8 g throughout the ride. The roller coaster track is 1.4 miles in length, ranking it sixth in the world for steel roller coasters. Due to the high air speeds and thus risk of an impact with airborne particulates or insets, all riders are required to wear safety glasses.

SS UNITED STATES

SS United States is a retired ocean liner built in 1950-51 for the United States Line at a cost of $79.4 million.

SS United States is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction.

On her maiden voyage, July 3-7, 1952, United States broke the eastbound transatlantic speed record (held by the RMS Queen Mary for the previous 14 years) by more than 10 hours, making the maiden crossing from the Ambrose lightship at New York Harbor to Bishop rock off Cornwall, UK in 3 days, 10 hours, 40 minutes at an average speed of 35.69 knots (40.96 mph).

On her return voyage United States also broke the westbound transatlantic speed record, also held by RMS Queen Mary, by returning the America in 3 days 12 hours and 12 minutes at an average speed of 34.51 knots (39.71 mph).

SS United States is currently moored at Pier 82 on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. Preservation groups have been raising funds to save the ship, but its fate remains uncertain.

SHANGHAI MAGLEV TRAIN

The Shanghai maglev train is a magnetic levitation train line that operates in Shanghai. The train line connects Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Longyang Road Station, where passengers can interchange to the Shanghai Metro to continue their trip to the city center.

The line is the third commercially operated maglev line in history (after the British Birmingham Maglev and the German M-Bahn) and is the oldest commercial maglev still in operation.

The Shanghai maglev train is the first commercial maglev with cruising speed of 268 mph and is the fastest commercial electric train in the world. *

*A TVG (France’s intercity high-speed rail operator) test train set the world record for the fastest wheeled train reaching a speed of 357.2 mph. However, conventional TGV service operates up to only 200 mph.

TGV – WORLD SPEED RECORD FOR A CONVENTIONAL WHEELED PASSENGER TRAIN (TEST)

The world record for a conventional wheeled passenger train is held by France's TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse), set in 2007 when it reached 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph) on a 140 km (87-mile) section of track.

THE FASTEST MOVING OBJECTS IN SPORTS – NUMBER 3 – JAI ALAI

Top 10 fastest moving objects in sports. Stay tuned as the countdown to number 1 continues.

Jai Alai (aka pelota) is known as the most lethal ball in sports. It is three-quarters the size of a baseball and harder than a golf ball. The best in the sport can toss the pelota at speeds greater than 188 miles per hour.

At the Speed Challenge Contest semifinals at Dania Jai Alai on November 24, 2017, Ibon Aldazabal broke the old record of 188 miles per hour with a throw of 190 miles per hour.

Longish video. I have it set up to start at 2:00. Aldazabal's record breaking toss comes at about 3:40. Slow motion replay at end.

American John Isner has the top speed recorded by the ATP, registering a 157 mph serve bullet during the 2016 Davis Cup. (Australian Sam Groh a 163 mph serve at the 2012 Busan Open, but it was not officially recognized by the ATP because of the inconsistences of the radar guns at that level of a tournament). (The speed of 253 in the video is km/h).

The fastest pitch belongs to reliever Aroldis Chapman, who hit 105.1 miles per hour as a rookie with the Cincinnati Reds in 2010.

(In 2010 a Nolan Ryan fastball was recorded at 100.9 miles per hour. At the time, speed was measured when the ball was ten feet from the plate. If the pitch had been measured at the now-standard 50 feet from the plate, the speed extrapolates to an incredible 108.1 miles per hour).

NASA HYPER-X (X-43A) WORLD'S FASTEST AIRCRAFT

On November 16, 2004, an unmanned Hyper-X (X-43A) aircraft reached approximately 7,000 miles per hour (Mach 9.6) thereby setting a new world speed record for aircraft. The aircraft developed by NASA was boosted to an altitude of 109,000 feet by a Pegasus rocket launched from beneath a B52-B jet aircraft. The revolutionary ‘scramjet’ aircraft then burned its engine for around 10 seconds during its flight over the Pacific Ocean.

REPUBLIC XF-84H "THUNDERSCREECH"

The Republic XF-84H "Thunderscreech" was an experimental turboprop aircraft derived from the F-84F Thunderstreak. Powered by a turbine engine that was mated to a supersonic propeller, the XF-84H had the potential of setting the unofficial air speed record for propeller-driven aircraft, but was unable to overcome teething aerodynamic deficiencies, resulting in the program's cancellation in 1956.

NOISE:

The XF-84H was quite possibly the loudest aircraft ever built (rivaled only by the Russian Tupolev Tu-95 "Bear" bomber), earning the nickname "Thunderscreech".

·         On the ground “run-ups” could reportedly be heard 25 miles away.
·         The blades on the XF-84H’s propeller traveled faster than the speed of sound, producing a continuous visible sonic boom that radiated laterally from the propellers for hundreds of yards.
·         The shock wave was actually powerful enough to knock a man down.
·         The aircraft was notorious for inducing severe nausea and headaches among ground crews.
·         In one report, a Republic engineer suffered a seizure after close range exposure to the shock waves emanating from the aircraft.

SPEED:

The Guinness Book of World Records recorded the XF-84H as the fastest propeller aircraft ever built, with a top speed design of 673 miles per hour and 623 miles per hour. This claim has been disputed. The unofficial speed record based on data from the National Museum of the United States Air Force is 520 miles per hour (mach 0.70). Nevertheless, the XF-84H held the record as the fastest single-engine propeller-driven aircraft until 1989 when “Rare Bear” a highly modified Grumman F-86 Bearcat reached 528 mph.
