SHANGHAI MAGLEV TRAIN

The Shanghai maglev train is a magnetic levitation train line that operates in Shanghai. The train line connects Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Longyang Road Station, where passengers can interchange to the Shanghai Metro to continue their trip to the city center. The line is the third commercially operated maglev line in history (after the British Birmingham Maglev and the German M-Bahn) and is the oldest commercial maglev still in operation. The Shanghai maglev train is the first commercial maglev with cruising speed of 268 mph and is the fastest commercial electric train in the world. * *A TVG (France’s intercity high-speed rail operator) test train set the world record for the fastest wheeled train reaching a speed of 357.2 mph. However, conventional TGV service operates up to only 200 mph.

PRINCETON BRANCH (AKA “THE DINKY”)

The Princeton Branch is a commuter rail line and service owned and operated by New Jersey Transit. The line is a short branch of the Northeast Corridor Line, running from Princeton Junction northwest to Princeton with no intermediate stops. The branch is served by special shuttle trains. Now running 2.7 miles along a single track, it is the shortest scheduled commuter rail line in the U.S. The run takes approximately 5 minutes in each direction.

HEAVIEST AND LONGEST (LENGTH) TRAIN

On June 21, 2001, BHP Iron Ore set a new world record for the longest and heaviest freight train. The train traveled from Yandi mine and Port Hedland in Western Australia. The train operated 172 miles with 682 loaded iron ore cars. The train weighed 99,734 tons and measured 4.57 miles in length. The train was run as a test of distributed power, with a combined eight GE AC6000 locomotives in five locations from front to rear of the train.

TGV – WORLD SPEED RECORD FOR A CONVENTIONAL WHEELED PASSENGER TRAIN (TEST)

The world record for a conventional wheeled passenger train is held by France's TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse), set in 2007 when it reached 574.8 km/h (357.2 mph) on a 140 km (87-mile) section of track.

WECX 801 – WOLRLD’S LARGEST RAILROAD CAR (SCHNABEL CAR)

A Schnabel car or Schnabel wagon is a specialized type of railroad freight car. It is designed to carry heavy and oversized loads in such a way that the load makes up part of the car. The largest Schnabel car in public railroads operation, reporting number WECX 801, was completed in 2012 by Kasgro Railcar of New Castle, PA, for Westinghouse Nuclear and is used in North America primarily to transport reactor containment vessels. It has 36 axles (18 for each half). Its tare (unloaded) weight is 362.5 tons and has a load limit of 923.4 tons. When empty, WECX 802 measures 231 feet long. For comparison, a conventional boxcar currently operating on North American railroads has a single two-axle truck at each end of the care, measures 50 to 89 feet long and has a capacity of 64 to 95 tons. The word Schnabel is from German Tragschnabelwagen, meaning “carrying-beak-wagon”, because of the usually tapered shape of the lifting arms, resembling a bird’s beak.

LONGEST (ROUTE) TRAIN IN THE U.S.

At 2,728 miles in length, Amtrak’s Texas Eagle train service between Chicago and Los Angeles is the longest regularly scheduled train route in the U.S. Trains run daily between Chicago and San Antonio. Three days a week, the train operates as a section of the Sunset Limited. The westbound Texas Eagle joins the with the westbound Sunset Limited in San Antonio and continues to Los Angeles. The Texas Eagle makes 40 stops and has an average travel time between Chicago and Los Angeles of 68 hours and 45 minutes.

BAILEY YARD

Bailey Yard is the world’s largest railroad classification yard.

Bailey Yard personnel sort, service and repair locomotives and cars headed all across North America. Owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP), Bailey Yard is located in North Platte, Nebraska. The yard is named after former Union Pacific president Edd H. Bailey. An average of 139 trains and over 14,000 railroad cars pass through Bailey Yard every day, and the yard sorts approximately 3,000 cars daily using the yard’s two humps. The eastbound hump is a 34 foot-tall mound and the westbound hump is 20 feet high. These are used to sort four cars a minute into one of the 114 "bowl" tracks, 49 tracks for the westbound trains and 65 for eastbound. The bowl tracks are used to form trains headed for destinations across North America, including the East, West and Gulf coasts of the United States, and Canadian and Mexican borders.
