Weirton is a city in Hancock and Brooke counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The city of Weirton extends from the Ohio border on the west to
the Pennsylvania border on the east at a point where the northern extension
of West Virginia is 5 miles across. It is the only community in the United
States to touch two different states on either side and its own state on the
other two. |
The East River Mountain Tunnel is a 5,142-foot vehicular tunnel that carries Interstate 77 and U.S. Route 52 through East River Mountain between the communities of Bluefield, West Virginia and Rocky Gap, Virginia. The East River Mountain Tunnel is one of only two land vehicular tunnels in the United States that cross a state line, the other being the Cumberland Gap Tunnel (Kentucky and Tennessee). The state line falls almost exactly across the midpoint of the tunnel, with 51% of the tunnel residing in West Virginia and the remaining 49% on the Virginia side. |

length, the New River Gorge Bridge is the longest* single span arch bridge in
the Western Hemisphere. The bridge carries traffic on U.S. Route 19 over
the New River near Fayetteville, West Virginia. The New River Gorge Bridge
opened on October 22, 1977 and carries U.S. Route 19 traffic across the New
River near Fayetteville, West Virginia. It is crossed by an average of 16,200
motor vehicles per day. It is the fourth longest single span arch bridge in
the world and the third highest bridge in the United States.

their main span. If one bridge has a longer span than another it does not necessarily
mean that the bridge is longer from shore to shore or from abutment to abutment.
