MARYLAND STATE HOUSE (CAPITOL)



The Maryland State House, located in Annapolis, is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use, dating to 1772.

The capitol has the distinction of being topped by the largest wooden dome in the United States constructed without nails.  The dine was added to the building between 1785-94, and has a height of 181 feet, exterior to the weather vane.

HANCOCK, MARYLAND



Hancock is a town in Washington County, Maryland that is notable for being located at the narrowest part of the state. The north-south distance from the Pennsylvania state line to the West Virginia state line is only 1.8 miles.

The 1.8-mile distance from the Maryland/Pennsylvania state line to the Maryland/West Virginia state line is the smallest non-vertex* border-to-border distance of any U.S. state.

*A vertex is a point where two or more lines, curves or edges meet.

INTERSTATE 97



I-97 lies entirely within Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and is the only primary Interstate Highway outside of Hawaii that does not cross a county line. At 17.62 miles it is also the shortest Interstate Highway.

ELLICOTT CITY, MARYLAND


Ellicott City is an unincorporated community and is the county seat of Howard County, Maryland. Ellicott City’s population at the 2010 census of 65,834 qualifies it as the largest unincorporated county seat in the U.S.
