Middlesboro, Kentucky is the only city in the United States built entirely inside a meteorite crater. Middlesboro is located in Bell County in southeastern Kentucky. The population was 10,434 at the 2010 U.S. census. It is located entirely between Pine Mountain and the Cumberland Mountains in the Middlesboro Basin, an enormous meteorite crater. The crater is approximately 3-mile-wide and the impactor is estimated to have been about 100 meters in diameter. |
