FLEVOPOLDER, NETHERLANDS

The Flevopolder is a polder (a region of reclaimed land), in Flevoland, Netherlands.

Spanning an area of 970 square kilometers (602 miles), Holland’s Flevopolder is the largest artificial island in the world.

The eastern part was drained in 1955 and the southern part in 1968. Unlike other major polders, such as Noordoostpolder and the Wieringermeer, the Flevopolder is completely surrounded by bordering lakes and can therefore be considered an island. It’s construction, however, differs from other artificial islands; dikes were first built around the area of the polder, and the water was then drained by diesel/electric pumps.

The Flevopolder, together with the Noordoostopolder forms the province of the Flevoland, the 12th province of the Netherlandands. The province has a about 408,000 inhabitants and consists of six municipalities. Its capital is Lelystand and most populous city is Almere.
