MLB - IMMACULATE INNING

An immaculate inning occurs in baseball when a pitcher in a half-inning of play throws only 9 pitches, each of which is a strike and thus strikes out 3 consecutive batters. Immaculate innings are rarer that “hitting for the cycle” or pitching a “no-hitter”, Currently 88 different MLB pitchers have accomplished this feat for a total of 94 immaculate innings. Only 5 players; Lefty Grove, Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Sandy Koufax and Max Scherzer have thrown an immaculate inning for than one. Koufax is the only pitcher to throw 3 of them. A record 8 immaculate innings were thrown in the 2017 season.

The most recent immaculate inning occurred on Saturday, March 30, 2019, when Josh Hader of the Milwaukee Brewers struck out three St. Louis Cardinal batters in the 9th inning.

MARCH - HIGH AND LOW TEMPERATURES FOR THE CONTIGUOUS U.S.

The hottest day of March occurred on March 13, when the temperature reached 102 degrees at Falcon Lake, Texas. There was only one other triple-digit reading in March and that was on March 9, when the temperature reached an even 100 degrees at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. There was a total of 23 days when the high temperature in the contiguous U.S. was 90 degrees or more.

The lowest high temperature in March was 84 degrees at Rio Grande Village, Texas on March 21.

The average high temperature for March was 91.61 degrees, a 4 degree increase over the average high temperature in February.

The coldest day of March occurred on March 4, when the temperature was a frosty -46 degrees in Elk Park, Montana.

There were 5 days between March 22 and March 31 when the low temperature did not fall below zero. The highest low temperature in March was 10 degrees at Chepeta, Utah on March 29.

The average low temperature for March was -17.19 degrees, a significant increase from the average low temperature of -32.10 degrees in February.

Not surprisingly, the greatest temperature differential between the low temperature and the high temperature occurred on the coldest day of the month. The -46 degrees at Elk Park, Montana combined with a 91-degree temperature at Kendall-Tamiami Airport in Miami, Florida to produce a temperature differential of 137 degrees on March 4.

The smallest temperature differential was 86 degrees on March 22. The low temperature on that day was 4 degrees and the high temperature was 90 degrees.
