The Jefferson Davis Monument State Historic Site is a Kentucky state park commemorating the birthplace of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America. The site’s focal point is a 351-foot concrete obelisk.

The obelisk is the tallest unreinforced concrete structure in the world. No steel was used to reinforce the concrete walls below its pyramidal top. It is also the tallest concrete obelisk in the world and the fifth tallest monument in the United States.

WORLD'S HIGHEST SHIP LIFT

With a vertical lift of 371 feet, the Three Gorges dam ship lift on the Yangtze River in China is currently the world’s highest ship lift.

The ship lift at the Goupitan reservoir dam on the Wujiang River in Southwest China is currently undergoing testing. When opened, the overall lift will have a water level difference of 671 feet, including a second stage lift of 417 feet. Both the second stage lift and the overall lift will set new world records for the highest ship lift.

VANGUARD 1 - OLDEST MAN-MADE OBJECT IN SPACE

Vanguard 1 is an American satellite that was the fourth artificial Earth orbital satellite to be successfully launched (following Sputnik 1, Sputnik 2, and Explorer 1).

Although communication with the satellite was lost in 1964, it remains the oldest man-made object still in orbit, together with the upper stage of its launch vehicle.

Original estimates had the orbit lasting for 2,000 years, but it was discovered that solar radiation pressure and atmospheric drag caused a significant decrease in its expected lifetime to only 240 years. (In other words, Vanguard 1 will retain the record as being the oldest man-made object in space until the year 2198).

Vanguard 1 also holds the record of having traveled farther over the Earth’s surface than any other man-made object.

SUFFIXED INTERSTATES

A “suffixed” interstate is one that carries a letter designation after the number. “Suffixed” interstates “split” from their parent as either a bypass or a spur. There were originally many “suffixed” interstates, but all but seven have been renumbered as 3-digit Interstates.
