Richmond, California is named after Richmond, Virginia.

Richmond, Virginia was named after the English town of Richmond (now part of London). 

Richmond (England) was founded following Henry VII’s building of Richmond Palace in the 16th century, from which the town derives its name. 

Richmond Palace was named after Henry VII’s earldom of Richmond, North Yorkshire. 

Richmond, North Yorkshire was named after the town of Richemont in Normandy (France).
