Ilha da Queimada Grande, also known as Snake Island, is
an island off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean. The island is small
in size and has many different types of terrain, ranging from bare rock to
rainforest, and a temperate climate. It is the only home of the critically
endangered venomous golden lancehead pit viper. It is estimated that there
are between 1 and 5 snakes per square meter on the island. Golden lanceheads
are so dangerous that, with the exception of some scientific outfits, the
Brazilian Navy has expressly forbidden anyone from landing on the island.
