Interstate
19 (I-19) is a north-south Interstate Highway located entirely within the
state of Arizona.
I-19
is unique among U.S. Interstates because signed distances are given in meters
(hundreds or thousands as distance-to-exit indicators) or kilometers (as
distance-to-destination indicators) and not miles. According to the
Arizona Department of Transportation, metric signs were originally placed
because of the push toward the metric system in the United States at the time
of the original construction of the highway.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL PLAYERS CAN'T WEAR 6,7,8 OR 9
NCAA Rule 1, Section 22, Article 7, Clause b.2
prohibits college basketball players from wearing jerseys with the numerals
6,7.8. or 9.
The uniform policy is said to be intended to simplify the
hand signaling made by officials. When a player is whistled for a foul, the
referee signals to the scorer’s table the uniform number of the offender by
using his hands. The system is set up so that referees flash only two hands
to make their signals, making things easier for the scorer to interpret.

GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL - SWITZERLAND
The Gotthard Base Tunnel
is the longest and deepest railway tunnel in the world.
It has a length of 35.47 miles and depth of 8,040 feet,
comparable to that of the deepest mines on Earth.
The tunnel cost more than $12 billion to build and took
17 years to complete. It opened in 2016 and provides a high speed-rail link
under the Swiss Alps between northern and southern Europe.
At the opening of the tunnel, a lavish show was
performed with dancers, acrobats, singers and musicians celebrating Alpine
culture and history. (See below).

“Centennial Light”
Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Dept.
4550 East Ave.
Livermore, CA
|
The fire department claims that the bulb is at least 117
years old (installed 1901) and has only been turned off a handful of times.
The bulb has been noted by The Guinness Book of World Records, Ripley’s
Believe It or Not, and General Electric as being the world’s longest-lasting
light bulb.

2
|
“Eternal Light”
Stockyards Museum
Fort Worth, TX
|
In 1970 it was credited as being the longest-lasting
bulb, two years before the discovery of the Livermore bulb. The bulb was
originally installed above the backstage door at the Byers Opera House on
September 21, 1908. The theater was demolished in 1977 and the bulb was
transported to a museum in the Livestock Exchange Building. Since its installation
in the museum, it has only been turned off once-by accident, before being put
on its own, unswitched, circuit.

Gasnick Supply Store
Second Ave.
Between 52nd and 53rd Streets
New York City
|
It was installed in 1912, according to store owner,
Jack Gasnick. On at least two occasions, Gasnick tried to discredit the Livermore
bulb in order to claim that his bulb was the longest lasting. (He apparently
was unaware of the Fort Worth bulb). It is unknown what happened to Gasnick
and his bulb. The store, and the entire half-block on which it stood, were
torn down in 2003.

Martin & Newby Electrical Shop
Ipswich, England
|
Given its shape and design, it was thought to date from
the 1930s. It burned out in January 2001.
|
The Livermore light bulb has been in continuous use for more than a century |
