Chimborazo is a currently inactive stratovolcano in the
Andes. With a peak elevation of 20,548 feet, Chimborazo is the highest
mountain in Ecuador. Chimborazo is not the highest mountain by elevation
above sea level, but its location along the equatorial bulge makes its summit
the farthest point on the Earth’s surface from
the Earth’s center, as well as the point on earth closest
to the moon. Until the beginning of the 19th century, it was
thought that Chimborazo was the highest mountain on earth (measured from seal
level).
